Perceptions

Some notes, thoughts & reminiscences

Dave S:

This track, along with Low and Crawl Line are probably my faves. I just feel that we were at our most innovative and certainly for me, crossing different musical genres.

Martin:

When playing the Bleak Insight CD back-to-back with other artists work, be it, Priest, Slipknot, Ga-Ga, 50, or even Meat-'n'-Two-Veg-Reg (Dwight), Bleak appears to have been mastered somewhat on the quiet-side. But relax, apparently we're in good company -- wasn't it always the case with Farrokh Bulsara's four-piece? I remember thinking at the time that the mixing and mastering of Bleak was being rushed. On the mixing front, the guitars sound good, the kick and snare sound good. But disappointingly, the bass, the vocals (particularly the backing vox) and the drum kit metal-work, do not sit in the correct space. Anyway, "Perceptions". I'm not sure if this is the best track to open with, it seems to take a very long time to get going and, for me, it only comes to life during the last 2-1/2 minutes -- progressing nicely from a particularly heavy section to a very atmospheric acoustic segment. Whatever happened to David Gilmour, CBE? There's also a half-decent spoken piece at 6:15, with some good ol' note bending underneath.

Ollie:

This track opens the Bleak Insight CD and was often the opening track at live gigs. I think that opening riff is great for developing a sense of anticipation for what is to come.

The lyrics here are pretty self explanatory. A song about how we are all blinded and compartmentalised by our and others preconceptions. Try and keep an open mind my friends and the world may surprise you.
